Titanic 2.0 Meets Iceberg 2.0

The iPhone Goes Both Ways
The likely availability of distributed, low cost, intelligent, OCR-scanning will put print publishers in pretty much the same boat as the music industry. Digital copying of text will be as easy and as useful as digital copying of recorded music (until recently digital copying meant copying the dumb image, not capturing the textual information in the typography. Google Book Search changed that).

I point this out not out of a desire to "put the frighteners on" print publishers, but to suggest that there is still time enough for print to get out of the hole the music business has dug itself. Get licensing those digital editions! Provide legitimate low cost access to everything for which you have a PDF file and valid title! There is no point in hanging back, publishers must build those digital markets before your customers start mode-shifting your content -- its a business imperative. The iPhone creates great potential for publishers, but if they dont seize it, they will find they have lost much more than a new opportunity.

Ah, such hope! That a jillion voices all saying the same damned thing will finally penetrate the thick skulls of an ollllld entrenched industry.

I see such tactics worked very well with all the Oil Companies. I mean, can't we all go out and buy Exxon-Mobil solar panels?! Aren't we all using BP quantum heaters? And Citgo zero point energy slabs in our cellphones?

Yeah, right.

If Teh Suits had any idea of how their industry was being taken away from them by The Darknet, they'd have the same liquid shits the greedy bankers have been experiencing.

I don't want Comments from Suits within their constipated conglomerates telling me "We're really trying." In plain talk: Fuck that shit. Must I pull that stupid Yoda quote out of my ass to wave at you? (And if you don't know that Yoda quote, please take that as a sign of your obsolescence and retire!)

While you lot diddle one another -- I read a wonderful term for you today: pearl-clutchers! -- your readership is taking the matter into their own hands with The Darknet.

Spray as much DRM as you like on things. The DarkNets will built a better Removal Tool.

That's when you even bother to release something in e. For all that stuff still trapped in p? Too much for your continued well-being already exists in e. Just ask Harry Potter fans!

Get it done.

Oh, and if you want to see just how feeble and pathetic your efforts to date have been, see The eBook Test blog. That's how sad you lot really are!

That is just absolutely disgusting! Do they expect people to get into Dune by offering only the worst book in the series? Or did they figure the book was so bad, no one would want to pirate it? And are they serious with that hardcover-like price -- or simply insane?

Even worse, I came across a listing for a book called The Secrets of Frank Herbert's Dune -- which is listed as No Longer On Sale. What does that mean? What if I still want it (I do!). Do I go looking for a pirate copy because some eejit company decided it was too much bother to take someone's money for it?

Sony's search engine had a failure, not showing the same books the Kindle Store had. So I double-checked and searched for each one by title and author and up they came. This, however, is Not Good and would have led to lost sales for people who count on a search by author name alone to present everything.

Powell's also had a search engine failure -- or possibly negligence in database encoding -- by not showing e editions for every title unless the title was clicked through to investigate. Also, and this really stinks, the e edition prices are higher than the p editions!

Why does Fictionwise have some Dick titles only in MobiPocket?

A point to eReader for having the Bischoff book (perhaps some others did, but the search engine didn't display them -- lost sales, eejits!).

Kindle again has the best prices. And that's significant: you'd save at least twenty dollars. That's like getting two books for free!

Not available in e: A Scanner Darkly, Maze of Death, Radio Free Albemuth, Confessions of a Crap Artist, Galactic Pot Healer, Eye in the Sky, World Jones Made, Solar Lottery, Deus Irae, We Can Build You, Now Wait For Last Year, The Cosmic Puppets, Clans of the Alphane Moon, Our Friends from Frolix 8, Zap Gun, Game Players of Titan, The Penultimate Truth, and the multi-volume Collected Stories.

eBooks? What iTunes eBooks?!

Sittin’ Here, Watching The Market Go By
Associated Press headline: “Apple sells 1 million iPhones in first 3 days”. Add to that the six million phones already in the hands of customers (all of whom, I should note, chose to update their software…right when I was updating mine). Doing some quick, nearly caffeine-free math, that’s 7 million web-enabled, application-ready phones in the wild.

And counting.

And:
Since there has been significant interest in using the iPhone as an ereader, I was, well, expecting amazing things from the publishing industry. Hopes. Dashed. On a weekend when headlines were there for the grabbing and customers were searching for both toys and content, the publishing industry, perhaps practicing summer hours, was curiously silent. Not a single major initiative, announcement, horns-blaring call to check out these great offerings on iTunes.

Call me crazy, but I’d expect an industry that salivates over moving 150,000 units to be all over the potential for reaching seven million “mobile is the future” customers. Are you not out there, listening to readers, gauging their interest? They want, you have, and you’re still hiding the goods. I get this isn’t the largest market you have, but is that an excuse to sit on the sidelines?

They're eejits. They're all Buridan’s Ass.

Apple -- that is, Steve Jobs -- will have come in and force them to decide.

-- via Teleread

Ten Searches A Day

That's the goal I've set for myself to get through the one-hundred-plus list.

So pop in here every day to see the latest ten. They should be up in the evening U.S. Eastern Daylight Saving Time.

So far it's been a depressing and grim task.

I hope it gets better.

But I've dealt with print publishers.

Hey, you eejits , look at what's happened to General Motors. Enter the 21st Century already!

I'm surprised by several things here.

One, that more of Ellison's collected works aren't in e. Where's The Glass Teat? Harlan Ellison's Hornbook? All the Lies That Are My Life? The Essential Ellison?

Second, that Kindle has more short stories of his than anyone else.

Three, that Sony is doing Ellison a disservice.

Note that for Harlan Ellison, I have left individual short stories out of these results. I'm more interested in collected and book-length works from all authors.

Again, Kindle has lower prices. Sometimes the discount is substantial, as when a book near $13.00 is smashed down to just $9.99. In addition, the Kindle Store has a book none of the others offer.

It's absolutely retarded that Raskin is not in e!

That even Kindle doesn't have him is surprising!

All of these titles are part of the Bryant & May series.

Someone somewhere needs a beating.

What is The Water Room doing at over twice the price of the first one? It's the second book in the series!

Again, Kindle has the best prices! But at least Sony isn't overcharging for Water!

I expect the price of White Corridor to drop very, very soon as the next book is about to be released in hardcover.

The prices, once fixed, are favorable against print.

All of Gischler's books are in e. And the prices are OK. Close to paperback. (Go-Go is the latest; just out right now, thus the higher price.) This is good.

Kindle has the lowest prices again!

And Diesel's per-format pricing is bizarre.

The eBook Test Note #2

Now I see why I didn't have any URLs saved from yesterday's searches.

Many of the URLs are per-book-title, not search term!

I went through that level of URL detail for Ken Bruen to see what it would be like to do.

Bugger that! I'm not doing it again.

I've got some authors who have many titles and linking to each title at every ebook store would simply grind me into dust!

In addition, I'm not even going to link to the ebook stores. The Bruen listing has those ten. Maybe later I'll do a specific post with just the ten stores.

But for now, just let me get yesterday's ten results up.

This is just a shock. Why does Kindle have more Bruen books than the rest? And that's not even all Bruen books!

Fictionwise's search engine failed to show both Bruen books until I serendipitously clicked on his name in the one search result given! What did I say about Suck?

In addition, Bruen has two series: the Brant series and the Jack Taylor series.

No one -- not even Kindle -- has the complete Brant series. The Jack Taylor series begins with The Guards -- which only Kindle has! How screwy is that for readers?!!?

Prologue: The eBook Test

The release of the iPhone 3G, the introduction of the App Store, and the coming release of several eBook reading programs have caused me to wonder if it's finally time for me to go all-eBook.

Print books no longer appeal to me from a size and weight perspective. I've had to box up and move my books several times in my life and it's not something I'm willing to do again. For books that are all-text, a weightless electronic edition makes more sense than one that's printed on paper and weighs a pound or three.

I've compiled a big fat list of authors and books I need in e form. let's see what's available and at what price and from what place.

Some notes first:

1) I don't care for PDF and will not list those

2) Expect everything to be DRMed

3) Sony and Kindle are each a single file format

Update:

4) eReader and MobiPocket are also single format
